(Runner´s interview no 3) The double World and double European Champion Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg from Norway returns to the international “o-battlefield” after a maternity break in 2011. A fan of Coldplay and a snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan looks especially forward to the relay race. Will Norway beat Sweden this year?
In 2 months, the first peak of this orienteering season starts – the European Orienteering Championships in Swedish Dalarna. How has your training for the EOC been going on? I try to gradually improve my training. After Tarjei was born (June 2011) there has been some challenges and patience has been the key word. However, I have attended this winter’s training camps with the national team and last time I could finally make the whole program.
What are your plans for the upcoming weeks until the EOC starts? Are you planning any special kind of training with the EOC focus? After Tiomila Anders and I will go directly to Dalarna and that last week before EOC will be my taste of the terrain.
If one says Sweden, what comes to your mind first? Magnus Uggla.
The EOC is hosted by Dalarna county. Have you got any experience with orienteering in this region? If so, how do you like the terrain here? Does it suit you? Right now I can only remember being in Dalarna once. O-Ringen in Sälen 2008 is indeed one of my best orienteering memories.
The EOC programme includes 7 races within 7 days. Are you planning to run all disciplines? That will be decided after our selection races in the middle of April.
In which disciplines do you think you have the highest chance for the top result? Is that discipline also your most favourite one? I guess my chances will be rather equal. I think we have an exciting team with a nice mixture of young and “more experienced” girls, and I look forward to the relay.
What do you expect from the EOC? Terrain, maps and courses will be on a top level. And that is what it takes to make me enjoy the championship.
Is there anything you perceive as particularly challenging in regard to the EOC 2012? Orienteering is orienteering. To find the right focus and stay there throughout the whole course is always the key.
