Fabian Hertner: “My shape is not good enough to fight for medals”

(Runner’s interview nr 11)

After the 2010 EOC sprint race he could say his favourite saying: “C’est moi le roy!” But his knee injury this February put the defending European Champion in sprint FABIAN HERTNER out of training for one and a half months. Will the Swiss runner manage to get in top form within the 4 weeks which remain until the start of the EOC?

In a month, the first peak of this orienteering season starts – the European Orienteering Championships in Swedish Dalarna. How has your training for the EOC been going on? For me the EOC will unfortunately not be a peak of this season. I injured my knee at the Portugal O-meeting which forced me to stop my training for several weeks. With the beginning of April I could restart my training, but if I run the EOC, my shape will be not good enough to fight for the medals.

What are your plans for the upcoming weeks until the EOC starts? Are you planning any special kind of training with the EOC focus? With respect to my injury and the WOC in July there will be no special training for the EOC. My focus the next weeks is on basic training.

If one says Sweden, what comes to your mind first? Red houses.

The EOC is hosted by Dalarna country. Have you got any experience with orienteering in this region? If so, how do you like the terrain here? Does it suit you? Earlier in my career I was running for Leksands OK where I spent some months for training. From there I have got some experiences and memories of the very nice terrain.

The EOC program includes 7 races within 7 days. Are you planning to run all disciplines? I would like to but since I’m not in a shape and there are too many other fast guys, it makes no sense.

In which disciplines do you think you have the highest chance for the top result? Is that discipline also your most favorite one? For the WOC I’m trying to focus on long, sprint and relay, but also middle is in my mind. So I’m pretty open and like all disciplines!

What do you expect from the EOC? I expect a very well organised week and beautiful competitions.

Is there anything you perceive as particularly challenging in regard to the EOC 2012? Nothing special, orienteering is orienteering…
